Overview

Mount Meru is a dormant stratovolcano located 70 kilometres (43 mi) west of Mount Kilimanjaro in the nation of Tanzania. At a height of 4,562.13 metres (14,968 ft), it is visible from Mt Kilimanjaro on a clear day,[5] and is the fifth highest mountain in Africa, dependent on definition.

Mount Meru is located just north of the city of Arusha, in the Arusha Region of Tanzania. It is the second-highest mountain in Tanzania, after Mount Kilimanjaro. The Momella route – which starts at Momella gate, on the eastern side of the mountain – is used to climb Mount Meru.

Mount Meru is the topographic centerpiece of Arusha National Park. Its fertile slopes rise above the surrounding savanna and support a forest that hosts diverse wildlife, including nearly 400 species of birds, and also monkeys and leopards. Mount Meru is part of the Arusha National Park located 45 km from Arusha town. The Park contains the 4556m high mountain, Ngurdoto Crater, the Momella soda lakes, as well as thick cloud and montane forests, acacia woodlands and grasslands. Home to elephants, huge herds of buffalo, bushbuck, giraffe and duiker, the Park is the also the best place to observe the unique black-and-white colobus monkeys. The hike up Mt. Meru is more physically demanding than Kilimanjaro, albeit only a 3-4 day hike (many climbers use this hike as a warm-up to Kili). The first stage takes you through the acacia woodlands, past resident herds of buffalo and giraffe and up to the base camp hut. The summit can be reached in 3 days but many people take 4 days to really explore the mountain. The accommodation and provisions are the same as on our Kilimanjaro Expedition.

Tour Plan

After meeting the armed Park ranger to accompany us, and registering ourselves at Momella Gate, the climb then starts out in the grasslands of the lower slopes where we will encounter: giraffes, buffalos and warthogs and then lush forest inhabited by bushbucks, red duikers, blue / Skye’s monkeys, black & white colobus monkeys and some variety of birds to Miriakamba Huts, 2515m / 8,250ft. (3 – 4 hours walk). Mt. Meru summit view from Miriakamba Hut, 2515m / 8,250ft.
Our destination today is Saddle Huts (3560m / 11,700ft) and along the way we will stop Mgongo wa Tembo (Elephant Ridge) viewpoint for lunch. After getting to our camp and resting we will hike to the summit of Little Meru (3810m / 12,500ft), which has spectacular views of Mt. Meru’s summit, and the sheer cliffs of the crater wall. As the sun sets behind us we can watch the glaciers on Mt. Kilimanjaro turn different hues of orange and red… spectacular! (3 – 4 hours walk from Miriakamba to Saddle hut)
We start out in early morning at 2.00 am in order to see the sunrise from behind Mt. Kilimanjaro. Along the way will pass Rhino point (2870m / 12,700ft) then like narrow ridge of the crater to summit itself. If the weather is clear, we see the active volcano of Mt. Oldoinyo Lengai to the west, and below us the town of Arusha and the plains of the Maasai steppe. From the summit we return to Miriakamba Huts for overnight after stopping for lunch and a while rest at Saddle Huts. (4 ½ – 5 hours walking from Saddle Huts to the summit, 2 ½ hours back to Saddle Hut from the summit, and 2 ½ hours more continuing to Miriakamba Huts)
We will descend back through the forest and arrive at Momella Gate by noon where we stop for picnic lunch and representation of certificates. Finally, we will have a drive back to Arusha by our vehicle(s)
